Lake Natron is an amazing rift valley lake in the northern part of Tanzania, it is placed at the lowest point of the rift valley about 600 meters above sea level, it is angelically placed at the foothills of Mountain Odonyio Lengai an active Volcano which influences happenings along the lake region, the locals and many travelers term the lake to as deadly because of its poisonous nature it is said that mammal species that drink from the Lake are turned into mummy’s. Lake Natron is a shallow saline soda lake fed by the southern Ewaso Ngiro River, it is a big breeding place for greater and lesser flamingos.
Lake Natron can be visited all year round depending on visitor like, however there are those months of the year that are better to experience the region around the lake, these are best during the dry season between the months of December- February and June- September when the trails are much drier and easier to access, it is also a busy season along the northern circuit hence expect more visitors during the dry season. For guests that are interested in birding, towards the end of the dry season is the best time to consider in August and October. It is a great point to see meet both lesser and greater flamingoes.
The wet season on the other hand is beautiful to visit Lake Natron, the weather is cool and with the least number of tourists at the destination these include March, April and May, lodges tent to offer a discounted price rate for travels while others might be closed off in the wet season. When considering this time, expect a muddy condition, and slippery roads.
Best time to visit Lake Natron is the most appropriate time for doing activities at the national park for example hiking the Mountain of God, guided nature walks along the beautiful trails of the rift valley region, flamingo walks, to mention a few, activities can be combined together with those of the neighboring national conservation areas for example the Serengeti national park and the Ngorongoro crater. Example animal species to see at Lake Natron include flamingoes, zebras, wildebeests and several other bird species to mention a few. In order to enjoy a great stay it would be ideal to spend 2 nights while here.
Along Lake Natron is a few growing desert like plants for example desert roses, the paleness of the floor of the rift valley is not to miss, it is one of the few places of the world where researchers found well preserved foot prints of homo Sapiens. In conclusion, Lake Natron can be accessed by road from Arusha for approximately +/- 3 hours drive directly, however it is more amazing when guests drive through conservation areas for more game including the so called big five of the wilderness.
