Game Drives in Lake Mburo National Park are the Major thing to do while in the park, it is the smallest of Uganda Savannah National Park, home to several animals despite the park history being eliminated over time due to infestations, pressure from population increase and also poaching. The Uganda Wildlife Authority has done a great job of reinstating the status of the park with animal relocation and continuous conservation policies. The region was first gazette as an important hunting ground and later given the full status of a national park, it is tucked route along the Kampala –Masaka-Mbarara highway in the Kiruhura district in western Uganda.
The park is comprised of a vast landscape underlined by metamorphic Precambrian rocks, 20 % of the park area is comprised of water bodies including Lake Mburo after which it is named, 5 of the lakes are found within the park together with swamps, water ponds within which there are popular sites of hippos and lined up olive baboons. The stretch of the savannah, grassy hills, acacia woodland rock outcrops is a phenomenal sight. These harbor many species including mostly antelopes for example reedbucks, oribi, Uganda kobs, Jackson hartebeests, topi, elands, and zebras, and over 300 species of birds for example the African fin foot, pied king fisher, faced go away bird, malachite king fisher, African watt led lapwing among others.
Game drives in Lake Mburo National Park take place through the well-distributed game trails of the conservation area, these are scheduled in the early morning at 6:00 am in search of morning risers like the Rothschild’s giraffes, zebras, at 2:00 pm eats African time and in the evenings, it is one of the few places of Uganda here doing night game drives is allowed these are mostly done in search of nocturnal species more so the cat families like civet cats, bush baby’s, photos, serval cats, thick-tailed galago, and porcupines, these are a must to take an armed game ranger from the Uganda wildlife authority.
Game drives in Lake Mburo National Park are conducted using 4*4 wheel car drives to beat the tough terrain of the ecosystem, the vehicles mostly have open roofs tops which are proper for game viewing and photography, and the extensive routes lead to animal points within the park, the best time to enjoy a game drive is early in the morning when the animals are just up, it is a very active moment and in the afternoon when they are relaxed from the feeding.
Besides game drives in the Lake Mburo National Park, there are other interesting activities to do in the national park including guided nature walks, boat cruise safaris, cycling, and horseback riding in the national park. The best time to visit Lake Mburo National Park is during the dry season between December – February, and June- September, it is also a good time to consider going for game drives as the trails tend to be drier and much easier to access.
