Nyamirambo Women’s Center was initiated by a group of women in Nyamirambo in Kigali, it began as a private entity offering employment opportunities to the women in society which eventually turned out something better and extended services with practices to travellers, they got you involved in the Rwandan style of doing things from their traditional basket weaving known to the Rwandan style to preparing of traditional meals and craft making.  Nyamirambo is one of the oldest neighbouring states of the capital city of Kigali. A team of 18 women came together to create the Nyamirambo Women’s Center. There are powerful women all around the region including political representatives in the parliament of Rwanda.

Nyamirambo Women’s Center overlooks several hills and valleys of the land of a thousand hills, routes to the centre are in good condition hence easy access, frequent visitors to the women’s centre commonly comment on how clean the place is, and easy-going women who are willing to share their knowledge and skills, these promote community-based tourism while in Kigali, it was founded in 2007 as a way of solving the gender-based violence, inequality among men and women today the main aim of the women’s center is to offer education and vocational training to women who do not have financial support to assist train themselves giving them the chance of attaining better work opportunities or even self-employment.

Nyamirambo Women’s Center is great to add to your Rwanda safari experience after your gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park you can return to the Kigali city tour and also visit the women’s centre. The center is focused on fulfilling the main goals and aims that they believe in as a community, for example, strengthening institutional capabilities, promoting and empowering women, and putting emphasis on community-based tourism.

While at the center they provide free adult education through workshops, teaching English, basic computer skills, handicrafts, sewing, weaving, and cooking, among other things. Travelers who visit the women’s center are allowed to engage in some of the activities for example preparing a typical traditional Rwandan meal. They have grown so much and employ other women who deal in different businesses like women’s accessories, house decorations, children’s wear, and basket weaving to mention a few.

In early 2004, a small community library was opened, this features Rwandan books in English and Kinyarwanda, a native language spoken by most of the people living in the country, the things that are done at the women’s centre have attracted so many travellers that come to Rwanda and are doing a city tour.

A tour here typically begins with a briefing from your guide of the day and then through the streets of Nyamirambo, you will be introduced to many friendly residents, if you are having hair may be doing a complimentary hair makeover, pass by a tailor shop to see the unique fabrics used to make cloth, visit the sisal basket weaving shop and then finally finish the day with a cooking class.
