Nyungwe Forest National Park is a biodiverse ecosystem in the southern western part of Rwanda straddling the border of the country with Burundi and the democratic republic of Congo, it is a unique forest said to have survived from the ice age era occupying an area of space of approximately 970 square kilometers, it was first recognized as a forest in the 1903 and was later recognized as a national park in 2004, it is famous for Chimpanzee alongside other 13 primate species that have been recorded and over 300 species of birds. There are a lot of activities that guests can engage in on their visit to the national park as below.
Chimpanzee tracking is the highlight of experience in the Nyungwe Forest National Park, the primates are scientifically proven to share up to 98% of the human DNA, and they are characterized by their social behaviour, intelligence with the ability to use tools, the primates are seen in the Cyamudongo part of the large forest sector (Umwinka and Gisakura ) region, tracking begins at the park headquarters with a morning briefing from the park rangers, after which you will begin the day, it takes 2-3 hours doing the activity, the chimps are loud with their charter sound and are messy eaters, this makes it easier for trackers to find them.An hour is allowed to interact with primates and take pictures after return.
Canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park, the suspended bridge is one of the most thrilling walks of the national park, it is the only place in East Africa to have such an experience, the long-suspended bridge runs are placed on 2 huge trees on both ends of looking the ancient forest, it is 160 kilometres long and 70 meters raised above the ground. There is a chance of seeing primates in the trees, and many birds in the forest, the activity is done for individuals up to the age of 6 years old it takes 2-3 hours to do the walk over the bridge with the lead of an experienced guide.
Black and white colobus monkey tracking, there are large troops of black and white colobus monkeys present in the Cyamudongo forest, imagine seeing many creatures all tucked in black and white, the activity is done beginning in the morning with a briefing from the park rangers, there about 400 individuals living in the forest, it takes 2-6 hours doing the activity depending on how far the primates have moved.
Hiking in the Nyungwe Forest National Park, there are well-distributed trails in the conservation area to the lovely features of the park, within are amazing waterfalls, it is believed to be the source of the Nile one of the world’s longest rivers of the world, the Isoma waterfall hike is the most famous hike of the park, along the hike are beautiful caves, swamps, birds and butterfly species.
Birding in the Nyungwe Forest National Park, a forest is a place of birds, there are over 300 species of birds that have been recorded in the conservation area, and through the well-distributed trails of the national park, it is possible to see as many birds in a few square meters, example species include the yellow-backed flycatcher, regal sunbirds, Albertine wolf, African pigeon, to mention a few.
In conclusion, activities in the Nyungwe Forest National Park can be combined with those of other conservation areas for example gorilla trekking in the Volcanoes National Park and wildlife views of the Akagera National Park.
